    Stringed Instrument Manufacturing in Bulgaria

     The foundation of modern Bulgarian stringed instrument manufacturing was in the middle of the 19th century. During the later years of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, the manufacturing of stringed instruments in Bulgaria developed rapidly along with the general economy of the country and the region. The first national competition for stringed instrument mastery took place in Sofia in 1949. "Sofia '83", the first international competition, was in 1983 and has since become a major cultural event. The second international competition, "Sofia - Kazanlak '87" attracted well-known stringed instrument masters from many parts of the world.

The primary centers for stringed instrument manufacturing in Bulgaria are in Sofia and Plovdiv. Kazanlak is also a very important center for the manufacture of stringed instruments in Bulgaria. This is the location of the manufacturing facility "Kazanlashka Cremona". Kazanlashka Cremona has taken on the general atmosphere of a university for the theoretical development and education of stringed instrument masters because the company has very close ties to similar facilities in Cremona, Italy.

Many contemporary representatives of the Bulgarian stringed instrument school continue to develop the art in the Italian tradition. Bulgarian stringed instruments are among the finest to be found on the world market and can be heard in the world's most famous musical theaters in the hands of world class musicians.
